n 1967 the United States was at war in Vietnam; Americans were mourning the death of three astronauts killed in January on Apollo 1; Lyndon Johnson was president; people might have been listening to The Doors new album and reading One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.
And the Culmore community welcomed a new and long-awaited library building in January.
Fifty years later, Woodrow Wilson Library staff are throwing a party to celebrate this milestone on May 20. Customers can stop by anytime 11 a.m.–3 p.m. to enjoy light refreshments, animals from Hidden Oaks Nature Center, face painting, 3-D printer demonstrations, a photo booth and a visit from Curious George after 1 p.m.
Woodrow Wilson Library anniversary celebration.
“Everyone at the Woodrow Wilson Library is very excited to be celebrating 50 years in this location,” said Ingrid Bowers, branch manager at Woodrow Wilson. “We feel extremely privileged to be serving this community for that length of time. Please join us for a fun-filled anniversary party!”
The library has come a long way from its modest beginnings as a 1,413 square foot storefront in 1961 to the robust 14,420-square-foot building holding a 50,000-item collection and serving an average of 500 people every day.
Join the festivities on May 20 or stop by anytime this month to offer your well wishes to the staff. Many thanks to the Friends of Woodrow Wilson Library and the Fairfax Library Foundation for making our anniversary extra special.
