Negative test result for coronavirus
January 31, 2020
The following message was shared with the university community Friday, Jan. 31:
Dear Mason Patriots,
The Virginia Department of Health announced Friday that the test result for the suspected coronavirus case associated with George Mason University is negative.
We continue to encourage all students, faculty, and staff to observe the precautions shared in previous emails to help keep the disease from spreading within our region.
University travel precautions remain in place. Mason does not have any students studying in China.
As always, we encourage everyone to treat others with dignity and respect and to not ostracize specific communities based on unconfirmed reports or suspicion of illness.
Additional cleaning routines in public areas and communicable disease prevention planning are still underway throughout Mason. The university will continue to monitor this situation and provide additional guidance as necessary.
Ideally the university does not acknowledge that a member of our community has become the subject of a health department investigation, out of concern for privacy. In this case, the abundance of information on social media and common knowledge that the suspected case was affiliated with Mason led the university to this decision.
It is extremely important that anyone who suspects illness caused by a novel communicable disease, such as coronavirus, seek medical attention and disclose their travel history. This information is vitally important in helping public health officials coordinate care for suspected cases and orchestrating a public health response to protect our community.
Respectfully,
Student Health Services

Update on student with symptoms consistent with coronavirus
January 31, 2020
The following message was sent to the university community Thursday, Jan. 30
Dear Mason Patriots,
The university continues to await more information on the student who has displayed symptoms consistent with the coronavirus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working as fast as it can, but it is dealing with a number of cases from across the country and that has slowed our results. Once we receive more information, we will update you immediately.
The student remains in self-isolation and is not living on or visiting campus. We are not aware of any other potential cases among the university community and continue to closely watch the situation.
Today the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a global health emergency. We continue to monitor the Virginia Department of Health website. As part of that process, we have learned of a second test pending for the Northern Virginia region. We have no information at this time that suggests the case is related to the case involving our student.
Please continue to observe the following precautions to prevent the spread of all communicable diseases: wash your hands often, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, decrease stress, and limit or eliminate the use of tobacco products. The university will provide more information when it becomes available.
For all information about this situation provided by the university please visit https://ready.gmu.edu/category/advisories/.
Respectfully,
