Weather Alert: Heat Advisory in Effect; Cooling Center at Green Acres Open 7/21-23
Post Date:07/20/2017
The National Weather Service has forecast a heat advisory for the City of Fairfax for July 21-23.
A heat advisory means a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.
Anyone seeking relief from the heat during this heat advisory may go to Green Acres Center, 4401 Sideburn Road, which is a cooling facility during its operational hours (8:30 am. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday).
The public also is welcome to enter any city facility normally open to the public, including City Hall and the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center, during normal operating hours. Other municipal facilities also will be available, including the City of Fairfax Regional Library.
A few tips from the National Weather Service:
Never leave people or animals in any vehicles, even for a short time, and bring pets indoors
Drink plenty of fluids.
Stay in air-conditioned rooms and buildings.
Stay out of the sun.
Check on relatives and neighbors.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, when possible. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
Know the signs and syptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.
If you must work outdoors, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location.
Heat stoke is an emergency: call 9-1-1 immediately for assistance.
